Creative Chaos – Stage Set

After our last series, we decided to go with a neutral stage set that we could leave up for awhile. It’s clean and simple but looks great. We stole the original idea from Newspring Church when we were there for the Unleashed conference. Here are a couple pics.

Leaders that influence

Here’s a short list of some leaders who currently have influence on me.

Robbie O’Brien – Lead Pastor of The Beachside Church. Robbie is an incredible visionary. God has used him over the past several years to help jump start an incredible movement in the Daytona Beach area. His vision for the future is massive and will have great impact.

Michael Neale – Worship Arts Pastor of The Peoples Church in Franklin, TN. Michael has been a friend, mentor, coach, etc for me for some time now. He’s one of the wisest guys I’ve ever met especially when it pertains to church life. I’m thankful for his willingness to take young guys under his wing and teach.

Gary Powell (my dad) – Pastor of Oasis Christ Fellowship in Ormond Beach. I’ve never known anyone with so much patience. He truly loves people and embodies the term “Pastor”. He’s devoted himself to pray and serve people. I aspire to have his kind of patience (something I have a deficiency of)

Carlos Whittaker – Programming director for Buckhead Church/ Blogger. I get a lot of creative ideas from Carlos. If there not from Carlos, they’re from a link or connection I’ve made through his blog. I appreciate his influence in the blog world.

They’re are many more like Craig Groeschel, Perry Noble, Tony Morgan, Rob Bell, etc. These are just a few….

Creative Chaos – pt 8

Check out the new stage set. Props go out to Missy and the rest of the worship team for making this happen.

Creative Chaos – part 7

We played this video last week and it’s pretty intense. We contemplated whether to play it or not and decided the message was too strong to let it go. I was nervous about it but I’m glad we did. We talked about being and example to our kids. check it out.

Creative Chaos: Creativity over Content

I think as creative people we have to be careful to not get carried away with creative elements. I think our nature is to be extravagant and our intentions are good. We can get lost in doing “cool” stuff but in the end distracts from the point. Here are a few things I try to remember;

  • The creative exists to support and promote the content
  • It should point to Jesus, not us.
  • If you can’t do it well, don’t do it at all.
  • It should engage people
  • Sometimes the most effective creative ideas are simple. Don’t overwhelm people by trying to do too much. It could be one song, or a graphic, or a video, or a prop. Pick the thing that’s really going to drive the message home and highlight it.

There are a lot a people over at Ragamuffin Soul that are great at this. check them out.

What are some other things that you try to remember that helps you be at your best when it comes to creativity? Help a brother out.

Creative Chaos

Last week we covered the song, “Whatever it Takes” by Lifehouse to kick off our “The Moment of Truth” marriage series. This week we’re talking about communication and we’re covering John Mayer’s “Say”. It’s funny because we really don’t do many covers but it just worked out that way on this series. In addition, we added in clips from “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” with Brangelina. It has some good counseling scenes. Also, for a teaching opener we play “Moment of Truth” montage videos like this one.

Creative Chaos

This we week start our “The Moment of Truth” marriage series. We’ve been seeing a major need over the past several months to talk about relationships. There seems to be a lot of us struggling with it. This series will be thought provoking and practical. Here is one of the teaching openers.

We’re also going to do the song “Whatever it Takes” by Lifehouse. Great tune.
