We’re back from our week long Disney vacation and we all had a blast!!! It went so much better than I expected. On this trip, I was especially thankful for my children and the joy they bring to our lives. It was good to spend a week of uninterrupted time with them. I didn’t open my computer for a week!!! That’s a big deal to those who know me! There are so many memories made in one weeks time and no way to share them all. Here’s a quick video of some highlights from our week.

Run to Daddy

I know I talk (or write) about my kids a lot and it’s obnoxious. The truth is, they are probably my number one source of learning when it comes to the things of God. Anyways, I dropped Gracie off at school yesterday and usually she goes right in without looking back. This time, I get all the way to the end of the hall and I hear her teachers yelling, “Gracie, Gracie”. I turned around and I see her long legs and blonde hair coming my direction as fast as she could go. She didn’t care who was in the way, she was running to daddy. When she got to me she jumped in my arms and gave me a big hug. We told each other, “I love you” and she walked back to class. Needless to say, it meant a lot to me.

I couldn’t help but ask myself when I drove away, when was the last time I did that? When was the last time I ran to God. Past the distractions, the noise, everything else in my way and just jumped into his arms to tell Him I loved Him. I have to be honest, it’s been awhile. I’m guilty of getting caught up in the craziness of life.

I want to encourage you with the same thing. Make time to spend with Him. Even if you have to find a place to get away from “the norm”. Get away from the cell phone, the computer, whatever and just enjoy being with each other.

My Gift to Myself

I feel old. I’m not, but I feel it. I was born about an hour ago in 1982. This birthday is one of the best yet for me. I was able to go to dinner with my parents on Sat, dinner with my wife on Sunday, and have the house to ourselves while our kids went to their grandparents. We were able to relax and more importantly catch up on all the shows we have on DVR!!! It might now sound like a big deal to some but to be able to watch our shows in peace and quiet was an amazing gift. At the end of the night, Jamie and I realized how much we missed our girls and how weird it was at home without them. They make our life much more full and interesting. I look forward to getting together with friends later on this week and seeing U23D. I love my friends.

Here’s the gift I will give myself this year for my birthday, a fresh perspective. I have this weird thing that although I am young I feel like I’m past my prime and all the good years are behind me. There’s so much I want to do and accomplish but for whatever reason I feel it’s too late. It’s crazy I know. So this year, I’m going to change that. A couple of my friends have started their “bucket list” (things to do before you kick the bucket in case you haven’t seen the movie). You can check their’s out here and here. I’m going to start mine today and I’m also going to make a list of things I want to do before I’m thirty. Maybe I’ll post them, maybe I won’t. The point is about perspective.

I challenge you to have a fresh perspective on your life. God wants to use you no matter where you’re at. There’s still great things ahead. What’s your big dream? What are the things you still want to accomplish? What are the excuses you’re using to not run after those goals? I want to get some feedback. I’m sure that a lot of our “issues” are the same.

Valentine’s Day at the Powell’s

It’s fun to have little girls on Valentines Day. They really get into. Right now there’s not a lot of pressure. I can still get away with little things and they love it. Gracie loved her rose and took it everywhere. Emmy was more into the suckers. They also made me a big banner that they hung on the wall. I liked that. Jamie is a great mommy and I’m fortunate to have her as my valentine.

2 years already….

So two years at this time, Jamie and I were preparing for the arrival of our second daughter, Emory Ruth. Little did we know what was in store for us. Today, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to God for bringing her into our lives. Her personality is so fun and refreshing. Although her independence and strong will can be a challenge, I believe God will use that as her strength later in life. She’s a fun kid and keeps us laughing. Today, my prayer is that God will help me as father to help shape her into a person of character. I’m excited to see where God takes her.

My favorite word

“Daddy”. It’s the best thing to hear in the world. Emmy has been sick and I was with the girls by myself last night while Jamie is at school. All night long Emmy’s been saying in the sweetest, most pitiful voice, “Hold me Daddy, Hold me”. How can you resist that? My heart drops every time. It paints such a beautiful picture of how our heavenly Father feels when we come to him and say, “Hold me daddy”.
