So, a few nights ago I had my first experience with a restaurant called, “5 Guys”. It was amazing. There’s nothing I love more than an good, all American cheeseburger with homemade fries made from real potatoes and to wash it down with a root beer. But even more that that, here’s what I loved about the place, quality and simplicity. You only have a couple options on the menu and they are broad casted with big red and white signs. They only do a few things but they do them really well. And, the place is flooded with people. Why would people come with so few choices?

I’ve been reading a lot about simplifying the church. Most churches feel the pressure of offering “something for everyone”. I’m not saying that’s wrong but I wonder if we miss the point in some way. I love the “5 Guys” model. Do a few things but do them really well. After all, “church” is all about a relationship with Jesus. There are some churches that you could go to for months before being introduced to the point of doing what we do. There’s a part of me that wants to go get some big white signs, and paint in red one line that tells what we’re all about (what He is all about) and leave it at that.

What are some ways that we could simplify our message and maybe in doing so be more effective?
